The first memory I have of my uncle Max was when I was very young. It was a Saturday morning and I was laying under a blanket on our yellow shag carpet watching cartoons. I knew Max was in town, but he must have arrived after I had gone to bed the night before. So I was probably watching Hong Kong Fuey or Looney Tunes and in walks this man dressed in a t-shirt and white linen pants and sandals, black rimmed glasses, and longer hair than I had ever seen anyone with in my family. That was Max and I discovered he was a very interesting person. Eating with him was interesting because he would take a bite and then set his utensils down and talk, then pick them back up taken another bite and set them down again. So, meals with Max could take a while, but the conversation was always fun. He would write letters to us from New Zealand and sometimes he would send me a cassette tape with some music … usually music that I had never heard before. Every 4 or 5 years he would fly in to visit and we’d go to the music store and book store together. Before he left he would always make a list of books and music that I should check out. I wish I had spent more time with him the last time he was here. I’ll always miss him, but it’s not ‘goodbye’, it’s ‘see you later.’
