What is Water Cremation?
Water cremation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis or aquamation, is an innovative and eco-friendly method of disposition. Unlike traditional cremation, which uses fire, this process relies on water, alkaline chemicals, and gentle heat to accelerate the natural decomposition process.
Bell, Lamb & Trotter operates New Zealand’s first water crematorium, here in Christchurch.

How It Works:
- Preparation: The body is carefully placed in a stainless steel chamber designed specifically for water cremation. This chamber is filled with a combination of water and a potassium hydroxide solution, creating an alkaline environment.
- The Process: The chamber is heated to a moderate temperature, typically around 150°C, under gentle pressure. This environment breaks down soft tissues into their fundamental elements over a period of typically three to four hours.
- Eco-Friendly Decomposition: The water solution transforms organic material into a sterile liquid composed of amino acids, peptides, sugars, and salts. What remains are the mineral components of the bones, which are carefully processed into a fine, white powder (ashes).
- Final Steps: The liquid byproduct is neutralised and safely returned to the water cycle, while the powdered remains are given to the family, similar to traditional cremated ashes.
Benefits of Water Cremation:
- Environmental Impact: Water cremation significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to flame cremation. It uses 90% less energy and avoids releasing harmful chemicals like mercury into the atmosphere.
- Gentler on Resources: Unlike traditional burial, water cremation doesn’t require the use of caskets, land space, or embalming chemicals, making it a sustainable alternative.
- Respectful and Gentle: The process mimics the natural decomposition that occurs over decades in soil, but within a controlled environment, ensuring dignity and respect for the deceased.
Why Choose Water Cremation?
This method aligns with a growing desire for environmentally conscious end-of-life practices. Families seeking a compassionate, sustainable, and modern approach to saying goodbye are increasingly choosing water cremation as a meaningful way to honour their loved ones while protecting the planet for future generations.
Water cremation is a harmonious blend of science and respect, offering a peaceful, earth-friendly alternative to traditional cremation and burial methods.
